The $1 billion Downtown Eastside Improvement Plan that was announced last week has officially been approved. The Improvement Plan is hoping to throw a ton of cash at the weathered streets of the DTES, though it isn't without its controversy. While there are major plans to increase social housing units in the area, some argued that there wasn't enough. The renderings that were released with the Improvement Plan show a lovely little neighbourhood with supremely cleaned up streets and budding development. In an area where the disparity between the rich and the poor is as obvious as a slap in the face, the city is hoping the billion dollar refresh will increase property values and decrease the stigma that plagues the streets of the Downtown Eastside. Is it possible?
