Downtown Eastside Jail Being Converted Into Social Housing

A former 36,000 square foot jail located in the Downtown Eastside is being converted into 96 units of social housing. The building is located at 211 Gore Avenue and was formerly the detention centre where prisoners were sent prior to trail. After it's closure, the building has been sitting vacant since 2002 but will now serve a different purpose. The development will feature shared amenity space for residents and each floor will have shared laundry, common lounges, and roof top deck access. In addition, there will also be community gardens and onsite employment training for at risk youth.
